There is rarely any web user who has not confronted the 404 Error while visiting any website. 404 is the most popular server response code among all. For a newbie in this digital marketing sector, you must know about the server response codes.


Whenever you visit a web page, there is a bureaucratic exchange going on between the user’s web browser and the server. The web browser requests the server to start exchanging code, images, and information.  After receiving the request, the web browser sends the message; ‘I received your request and here is what you can expect in the next few moments’. The message also includes the server response code which is helpful for the browser and the user to optimize the experience. Though sometimes the server codes appear like an error, actually there is a code for every successful online interaction. The server codes, also known as status codes are just like a feedback about the development and functioning of the website.


The text which transfers the information between the browser and server is called header. One has to see the programming of the server itself to find out the headers. It is produced by the machines which disseminate information across the web. You will find four types of the header:


  • General: Information related to the server, client, and the protocol.
  • Entity: Information regarding the data transfer

  • Response: Information regarding the message server sends

Here are the meanings of the most useful Server Response Codes.


Response Code 200:

It denotes that everything is alright and will deliver every information client has requested.


Response Code 301:

The page is moved to a new URL permanently and you will be resend there by the server.


Response Code 302:

The page is moved to a new URL temporary and you will be resend there by the server.


Response Code 400:

A syntax error is there in the request which is denied.


Response Code 401:

There is an error in the authorization code of the error which will not allow you to view the page you have requested.


Response Code 403:

You are not allowed to view the documents you have requested.


Response Code 404:

The document cannot be found. The requested page is neither on the server nor ever on the server.


Response Code 405:

The access method of the file is forbidden.


Response Code 406:

The user’s system is unable to see the format of the requested page and can’t show it.


Response Code 407:

The request needs authorization to execute.


Response Code 408:

As the server is taking too much time the request will be timed out.


Response Code 413:

Your request is too big to process.


Response Code 501:

Your request cannot be executed by the server.


Response Code 502:

Also known as ‘Bad gateway’, in this code the server is receiving errors while contacting.


Response Code 503:

There is temporarily unavailability of the format.


Response Code 504:

It is almost same as the 408 time out error except that it occurs in the gateway of the server.


Response Code 505:

Your requested HTTP protocol is not supported.
